Support Aquatic Animals this Giving Tuesday

Together, we can make a meaningful difference for aquatic animals and our planet. This Giving Tuesday, November 28th, stand with us in our mission to reduce the suffering of aquatic animals caught in the global food system.

The Global Scale of the Issue

Did you know that trillions of aquatic animals are killed annually for human consumption, making them the largest group of animals affected by our food choices? At minimum, estimates indicate that 2-3 trillion wild-caught fish, 100 billion farmed fish, and 350-400 billion farmed shrimp are killed globally each year. Despite these staggering numbers, the suffering of these animals is often overlooked due to the difficulty of empathizing with their behaviors and responses to stimuli.

Fish and other aquatic animals in wild and farmed environments endure high-suffering conditions, yet there is negligible advocacy aimed at improving their welfare. With their ability to feel pain, emotion, and impressive cognitive abilities, aquatic animals deserve protection through legislation, corporate policies and seafood certification schemes.

Our Approach: Creating Lasting Change

Aquatic Life Institute employs a 4Rs approach to create formative change within the global seafood system:

  1. Reduce the number of animals in, or remove animals from, the seafood system and its supply chain.

  2. Refine the conditions in which animals are currently kept or captured in the seafood system and its supply chain.

  3. Replace animal products with sustainable plant-based or cell-based alternatives to the extent possible in the seafood system and its supply chain.

  4. Reject the introduction of additional animals into the seafood system and its supply chain.

Why Your Support Matters: Achieving Milestones Together

Over the past year, Aquatic Life Institute has achieved significant milestones, including the launch of the Aquatic Animal Policy (AAP) focus group, securing policy wins with 2 global retailers to ensure that aquatic animal welfare is prioritized in seafood procurement, supporting 3 seafood certifiers as they put forward prohibitions on eyestalk ablation in shrimp and 2 prohibitions on octopus farming, as well as the publication of essential reports; check out our resources. We hosted our 4th Annual Aquatic Life Conference, which welcomed over 600 registrants and 20+ expert speakers, and actively participated in global events to advocate for aquatic animal welfare.

Join us this Giving Tuesday

Giving Tuesday is a global movement celebrating the incredible power of generosity. On this day, the world comes together to make a positive impact. Your support will help us advocate for aquatic animals and contribute to a more humane and sustainable seafood system.

This Giving Tuesday, we aim to raise $54,450 to allocate to two vital program areas:

  1. Participation in key global food systems dialogues: Engaging in discussions focused on influencing policies, practices, and perceptions in the international seafood sector.

  2. Research project - best practices in aquaculture: Identifying and promoting best practices for animal welfare in aquaculture, working towards a more humane and sustainable seafood system.

Your Impact: Every Contribution Counts

For every dollar you contribute, we estimate a significant positive impact, changing the lives of approximately 5,423 fishes and 221,343 shrimps through improved practices. Your support directly translates into substantial positive change for countless aquatic animals.

Donate now and be a part of the global movement for a kinder, more sustainable seafood system. Your contribution, no matter how big or small, is invaluable. Additionally, we encourage you to share this campaign with your personal and professional networks, amplifying the impact of our collective efforts.

We are thankful to our donors for their commitment to our mission. Together, we can create a brighter future for aquatic animals and our planet.
