
Hira Jaleel, Visiting Assistant Professor - Center for Animal Law Studies, Lewis & Clark Law School
Hira Jaleel is a Visiting Assistant Professor at the Center for Animal Law Studies at Lewis & Clark Law School in Portland, Oregon. Hira teaches various farmed animal protection courses, including Industrial Animal Agriculture Law, Aquatic Animal Law and Food Law. She also leads the Farmed Animal Protection Project, which offers students an opportunity to concentrate on farmed animal protection issues, including farmed aquatic animals, and to develop lawyering and other professional skills used by farmed animal protection advocates. Hira’s research and scholarship focuses on international and comparative animal law issues, and she has published extensively on developments in animal law in South Asia.
Beyond her work at CALS, Hira is the Co-Chair, Wildlife Law Subcommittee for the Animal Law Section of the American Bar Association (2023-2025). Hira was also previously the Vice Chair Programs of the International Animal Law Subcommittee of the International Law Section of the ABA (2023-2024).
As part of her work, Hira has worked with all four provincial governments in Pakistan to update their animal welfare legislation. Hira has also been a consultant for Pakistan’s Federal Ministry of National Food Security & Research, and has worked on a new Federal Animal Health Bill for Pakistan in collaboration with the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH).
