Celebrating 5 years of impactful change!

CREATING A BETTER FUTURE FOR AQUATIC ANIMALS

Why aquatic animals?

Up to 2-3 trillion wild caught fishes, 100 billion farmed fishes, trillions of wild caught shrimps, and 350-400 billion farmed shrimps are killed globally each year, and experience high-suffering conditions. There is negligible advocacy aimed at improving aquatic animal welfare, however, fish feel pain, emotion, and have impressive cognitive abilities, and more research is emerging to prove the same for other aquatic animals. Legislation, corporations, and seafood certifications must include high welfare standards for aquatic animals in farms and marine capture fisheries.

Our Mission

To reduce the suffering of the trillions of aquatic animals being farmed and caught in the wild for human consumption each year.

Effective Altruism

We are founded in, and operate on effective altruism principles. We aim to use and conduct the latest research to guide global interventions with the highest impact, reducing the most suffering at the lowest cost point.

What we do

We are a leading organization championing aquatic animal welfare through industry and legislative guidance, fostering trusted partnerships to drive ethical and sustainable practices across the global seafood supply chain.

  • Certifier Campaign

We help seafood certifiers define high welfare seafood products in both aquaculture and marine capture fisheries.

  • Supply Chain

We collaborate with key stakeholders throughout the entire seafood supply chain, including producers and global retailers.

  • Policy Initiatives

We engage with international organizations, including the EU and FAO, to influence changes in policies on a global scale.

  • Coalition Building

We unite nonprofits, academic institutions, industry stakeholders, and the public to achieve more for the animals.

  • Research

We conduct research to support certifying bodies in defining high welfare products and to influence industry and legislative change, and corporate engagement.

Our approach

‘4R’ Approach to Seafood System Reform

Aquatic Life Institute utilizes 4 fundamental approaches to enact formative change within the global seafood system.

  1. Reduce the number of animals in, or remove animals from, the seafood system and its supply chain.

  2. Refine the conditions in which animals are currently kept or captured in the seafood system and its supply chain.

  3. Replace animal products with sustainable plant-based or cell-based alternatives to the extent possible in the seafood system and its supply chain.

  4. Reject the introduction of additional animals into the seafood system and its supply chain.
