
Steffan Edward, Seafood Certification Specialist
Steffan (he/him) holds a postdoctoral degree in Animal Science from the University of São Paulo, where he focused on equine welfare. He also earned his Ph.D. and M.Sc. in Animal Science from São Paulo State University (UNESP), specializing in pain and suffering during slaughter. His research has been published in leading scientific journals, and he has experience in project management, research, corporate relations, and advocacy. Steffan has worked with several animal protection organizations, leveraging his expertise in scientific writing, strategic communication, stakeholder management, and project leadership. He is passionate about driving systemic change in animal welfare and is particularly focused on ensuring that certification schemes reflect the highest welfare standards.
He is honored to be part of the Aquatic Life Institute team and believes that ALI’s guidance on aquatic animal welfare will be instrumental in catalyzing meaningful progress in certification programs worldwide. By working closely with key stakeholders, he strives to promote science-based, practical solutions that reduce animal suffering and set new benchmarks for welfare standards in the industry. Steffan will support the development and execution of our annual benchmark, and engage with certifiers to drive impactful, data-driven changes in welfare standards. He will manage existing relationships with current partners, track and report on certification updates, and play a vital role in expanding our network of certifier and ratings agency partnerships for future benchmark iterations.
